SANTA CLARA, Calif.- The Portland Pilots (3-23, 0-7 WCC) got another solid pitching performance from sophomore right-hander Matthew Peters, scattering four runs over eight innings, but Santa Clara pitching limited the Pilots to just five hits in a 4-1 home victory at Buck Shaw Stadium Friday night. Peters (1-5) scattered 13 hits and three walks, while striking out five and leaving 10 Broncos on base, but Michael Thompson carried Santa Clara (15-15, 4-3 WCC) with three doubles and two RBI.
Thompson’s double in the first inning down the left field line scored Robert Perry giving the Broncos an early edge. Another two-bagger in the fifth inning scored Ryan Chiarelli before Will Thompson brought home Santa Clara’s third run of the game with a single up the middle.
That would be all the runs Bronco starter Chad Fillinger would need, as he breezed through eight innings allowing just four hits, one walk and striking out nine Pilots.
Pilot freshman shortstop Jesse Rodgers spoiled the shutout with an RBI single scoring Joe Watson in the eighth. Fillinger improved to 4-5 on the season and closer Anthony Rea picked up his eighth save of the year with a scoreless ninth.
Jeffrey Crinklaw hit his team-leading 10th double of the season off of Rea, but was one of four Pilots left stranded for the game. Watson Colton Homme and Nik Kosach were the other Pilots to tally base hits in the contest.
David Hoffmire was a perfect 4-for-4 with an RBI and Perry finished 2-for-5 at the plate for the Broncos.
The Pilots and Broncos continue their three-game WCC series on Saturday at 1 p.m. and conclude the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
