SAN DIEGO, Calif.- Travis Vetters had three hits and Portland’s only RBI as the San Diego Toreros (24-19, 11-9 WCC) beat the Pilots, 8-1 at Cunningham Stadium. Portland (7-31, 3-14 WCC) had 12 hits on the day, but went just 4-for-19 with runners in scoring position and stranded eight runners.
Pilot freshman right-hander Sean Sargent breezed through the first three innings, allowing just two hits to the Toreros. San Diego scored two runs in the fourth off Sargent on three hits and a pair of walks before sophomore lefty Jared Adams came on to get the final two outs. USD would never trail and Sargent fell to 2-5 on the season with the loss. Adams pitched the final 4.2 innings and would be credited with six runs against 10 hits.
The Toreros added another run in the fifth inning, but Portland answered with an RBI-single from Vetters in the sixth scoring Gustaf Little, who led off with his eighth double of the season.
San Diego tallied another score in the seventh before opening it up with a four-run eighth. Tom Caple’s two-run homer to left field capped the scoring for USD.
Kyle Collins (5-1) went seven innings to get the win for the Toreros, allowing 10 hits and one run without walking a single batter. Freshman reliever Nate Boman recorded the final six outs to earn his fourth save of the season.
Little, Jesse Rodgers and Nik Kosach each had two hits for the Pilots. Little’s sixth inning double was the only extra-base hit on the day for Portland.
Caple finished 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs. Freddy Sandoval and Jose Ortega also chipped in three hits apiece.
The teams will meet again on Sunday at Cunningham Stadium at 1:00 p.m.
