SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The San Diego Toreros (25-19, 12-9 WCC) racked up 19 hits en route to a 13-3 win over the Portland Pilots (7-32, 3-15 WCC) on Sunday afternoon at Cunningham Stadium. The Toreros swept the three-game West Coast Conference series and won their fifth straight contest, while Portland dropped their sixth straight outing. Pilot sophomore Travis Vetters recorded his second consecutive three-hit game and finished the series 8-for-13 at the plate, increasing his season batting average to .351.
The Toreros scored early and often putting up five first inning runs, four being unearned, off Pilot starter Kyle Corra (0-4). Tom Caple, Joey Prast and Jose Ortega each doubled off Corra in the first inning and Jordan Abruzzo added a two-RBI single.
Trailing 6-0 in the fifth inning, Vetters put the Pilots on the board with an RBI-single scoring Billy Krause. Vetters hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning, scoring Gustaf Little and Adam Kerr had a run-scoring single in the eighth to account for the three Pilot runs.
USD scored three runs in both the seventh and eighth innings for the lopsided victory. Torero junior Randy Curtis went 4-for-4 with a home run, his second of the series, and three runs scored. Justin Blaine (4-2) earned the win, allowing just one run and striking out six in seven innings.
Given Kutz went 4.2 innings out of the Pilot bullpen, surrendering three earned runs and striking out three. Kerr finished with a pair of hits for Portland.
The Pilots return home for a three-game West Coast Conference series against the Saint Mary’s Gaels, beginning Friday, April 30 at 3:00 p.m. The teams will then play a doubleheader on Saturday, with the first game starting at 11:00 a.m.
