SEATTLE, Wash.- Washington senior John Otness victimized Portland again, belting a homer, double and scoring two runs as the Huskies beat the Pilots 5-1 Wednesday evening at Husky Ballpark. Washington (30-15-1) won its 11th game in its last 13 and 10th straight over the Pilots (10-38). Portland’s Travis Vetters extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a home run in the fourth inning.
Otness and Ben Johnson hit back-to-back blasts to lead off the scoring in the third inning off Pilot freshman starter Given Kutz. Otness finished the two-game series 6-for-9 with two homers and six runs batted in.
Kutz would keep Portland close but was spotted for another run in the sixth and two more in the seventh before handing the ball to fellow frosh Sean Sargent. Kutz (2-3) went 6.2 innings, surrendering five runs on six hits while fanning three.
Three Husky pitchers combined to limit the Pilots to just four hits and no walks. Jordan Ponzoha (1-0) was credited with his first career win in the predetermined, three-inning start.
