PORTLAND, Ore.-The San Francisco Dons scored twelve runs in the fifth inning en route to a 14-2 romp over the Portland Pilots Sunday afternoon at Pilot Stadium. San Francisco (26-29, 13-14 WCC) tallied 19 hits on the day, while Portland (10-41, 5-22 WCC) managed just five hits and committed five errors.
USF senior shortstop Armand Gaerlan extended his hitting streak to a team-record 23 games with a single in the fifth. Gaerlan finished 1-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.
The Dons carried a 2-1 lead into the fifth inning and jumped on Pilot freshman right-hander Given Kutz as eight of the first nine batters reached base. Sophomore Joe Jones came on in relief, but USF tacked on four more runs off Jones before a groundout ended the misery. The Pilots allowed eight hits, four walks, two errors and hit four batters in the frame.
Kutz took the loss and fell to 2-4 on the season. USF starter Kevin rose tossed six innings and allowed just one run while fanning eight, improving to 5-7 on the year.
Pilot junior Mike McRae belted his seventh home run of the season in the second inning and Billy Krause tripled and scored in the seventh to account for Portland’s runs.
Pilot sophomore Travis Vetters extended his hitting streak to 18 games with a single in the third inning.
Chris Genung finished 2-for-3 with his 22nd double of the season, two runs scored and three RBI for the Dons, while Jonnie Knoble tallied three hits.
Portland next travels to Corvallis, Ore. for a match-up with the Oregon State Beavers on Tues., May 18 at 5:00 p.m.
