CORVALLIS, Ore.- After losing ten straight games to the Oregon State Beavers, the Portland Pilot baseball team is making a habit of beating its instate rival, at least until the second game of today’s double header. The Pilots and Beavs spilt the two game, nonconference affair, 3-1 and 3-16 at Goss Stadium in Corvallis, Ore. With the split, the Pilots are now 11-42 overall, while Oregon State sits at 28-19.
Pilot hurlers Andrew Renyer and Trent Kristjanson combined for a masterful performance in the first game. Renyer allowed only one earned run in 4.2 innings of work. Kristjanson pitched the final 2.1 innings of the seven-inning game and held the Beavs to one hit. Kristjanson picked up his first save of the season while Renyer improved his record to 1-0.
Jonah Nickerson (4-2) went the distance for OSU but allowed three Pilot runs, all earned. Portland got the scoring going in the second inning when Jeff Crinklaw scored on an Adam Kerr groundout. Crinklaw had started the inning with a leadoff single. Billy Krause then knocked in Mike McRae with a two-bagger to right field. The RBI is Krause’s 10th on the season.
Oregon State made it 2-1 before the Pilots added a little insurance in the sixth. Crinklaw again got the inning going with a leadoff hit, this time a double down the left field line. Joe Watson then picked up his 17th RBI with a sacrifice fly to center that scored Crinklaw.
Game 2 started off similar to game one but finished noticeably different. The Pilots wasted no time getting on the board as they scored two in the top of the first. With Travis Vetters aboard, Crinklaw continued his torrid day as he belted his fifth home run of the season to left field.
The Portland lead, however, was short lived. Oregon State poured it on beginning in the bottom of the second. Pilot starter Matthew Peters allowed two Beaver runs on two hits, capped off with a Billy Munich RBI single to center to tie it.
Oregon State scored another in the third to take the 3-2 lead and chase Peters (3-9) out of he game. Four Beaver pitchers held the Pilot bats to only six hits. Ben Rowe (1-1) picked up the victory for OSU.
The Pilots now return to West Coast Conference action as they wrap up the regular season this weekend against Santa Clara. Portland will try to improve its 5-22 conference mark against the Broncos who are 14-13 in the WCC, 25-28 overall. The three-game series starts on Friday at 3:00 p.m. at Pilot Stadium.
