SUNRIVER, Ore.- Ninth-seeded New Mexico fired a team score of 286 (-2) in Friday’s NCAA West Regional second round to move to 6-under (570) for the tournament and overtake top-seeded UCLA by one stroke. UCLA, the defending West Regional Champion, sits alone in second-place after an even-par 288, while three times trail by five strokes at 1-under (575).
No. 2 Arizona State, No. 5 Brigham Young and third-seeded Arizona are the group at 1-under. No. 12 Toledo started strong and held the lead much of the day before falling to 2-over for the tournament in a tie for sixth-place with upstart California. The sixth-seeded Golden Bears finished the round at 11-under (277), nine strokes better than any other team on the day.
Fourth-seed USC fell to eighth-place at 4-over (580), while eighth-seeded Washington and 15th-seeded San Diego State are tied for ninth at 7-over (583).
UCLA’s Travis Johnson, Brigham Young’s Oscar Alvarez, and Arizona’s Henry Liaw and Chris Nallen share the individual lead at 5-under (139). New Mexico’s Charlie Beljan jumped 45 spots after a second round low score of 6-under (66), and is tied with four others at 4-under (140) for the tournament.
Groups that teed off in the morning session had significantly better results compared to the afternoon groups. The only teams with scores at, or below par (California, New Mexico, Arizona and UCLA) went out early. Out of the 27 early groups, 20 players shot in red numbers while just one player (Buddy Davis of Furman) of the 20 late groups broke par.
The West Regional concludes tomorrow at the par-72, 7,597 yard Crosswater Club at Sunriver Resort with the third and final round. The top 10 teams, plus two unattached individuals, will advance to the NCAA Championships at The Cascades in Hot Springs, Virginia.
