MALIBU, Calif.- The Pepperdine Waves (21-25, 15-7 WCC) pounded out 12 hits and capitalized on three Pilot errors to defeat Portland (10-34, 5-17 WCC) 14-1 at Eddy D. Field Stadium Friday afternoon. The top four batters in the Pepperdine lineup went 9-for-17 with nine runs and eight RBI, as the Waves used a seven-run sixth inning to put the Pilots away.
Portland starter Matthew Peters (3-8) allowed two runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth before being ran by the Pepperdine bats. Peters struck out five, but walked four and allowed three hits in 3.2 innings of work. Pepperdine’s Jacob Barrack (8-3) earned the win after tossing seven innings of shutout ball, striking out six Pilots and giving up just five hits.
Given Kutz provided the only Portland run with an eighth inning, pinch hit home run to left-center field. Kutz homered in just his third at bat of the season, he is 2-for-3 in pinch hit opportunities.
Travis Vetters extended his hitting streak to 11 games for the Pilots with a leadoff single in the sixth inning. Vetters finished 2-for-4 and now has 18 multi-hit games. Justin Pierce went 2-for-3, making it nine straight games with a hit for the sophomore.
Luke Salas led the way for Pepperdine, going 3-for-4 with three runs, and three RBI. Steve Kleen had two hits and drove in three runs while David Uribes scored four runs out of the leadoff spot.
The teams will meet for the second game of the series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. and conclude the three-game set on Sunday with another 1:00 p.m. start.
