MALIBU, Calif.- Three Pepperdine pitchers combined to limit the Portland Pilots (10-36, 5-19 WCC) to five hits in a 9-0 shutout Sunday afternoon, completing a three-game series sweep at Eddy D. Field Stadium. Pepperdine (23-25, 17-7 WCC) freshman right-hander Robert Della Grotta struck out a career-high 12 Pilots, while senior designated hitter Brent Lewis capped an impressive weekend with three hits, a homer and three RBI for the Waves.
The win clinched at least a share of the West Coast Conference's (WCC) West Division title for the Waves (23-25, 17-7 WCC). Pepperdine currently holds a six-game lead over Santa Clara with six games remaining.
The Waves scored two runs off of Pilot freshman starter Brian Cox in the first inning and Jared Sandberg’s three-run home run with no outs in the second forced Portland to the bullpen early. Cox (1-1) took the loss after allowing five runs on five hits in one inning of work.
After Gustaf Little’s leadoff single, Della Grotta retired the next 10 batters before Travis Vetters extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a single in the fourth inning. Vetters finished the weekend 4-for-12 and has a team-best .353 batting average.
Della Grotta cruised to earn his first win of the season, improving to 1-4. In seven innings, he struck out 12 Pilots, while allowing five singles and two walks. Paul Coleman and James Johnson each pitched a scoreless inning to close out the game.
Lewis hit a two-run dinger in the sixth off Pilot reliever Trent Kristjanson, who tossed 6.2 innings of relief, giving up three runs and striking out five Waves.
The Pilots will now prepare for 16th-ranked Washington, who took 2-of-3 from No. 1 Stanford at Husky Ballpark this past weekend. Portland and Washington meet on both Tuesday and Wednesday in Seattle, with both games set for 6:30 p.m. start times.
