The Portland men’s tennis team traveled to Seattle, Wash. to open its 2005 spring season against No. 21 ranked Washington on Friday, Jan. 21. The Pilots battled, but lost, 6-1. Roman Borvanov led Portland with a 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 victory at the No. 2 singles position in the match. With the loss, Portland falls to 0-1 overall, while the Huskies improve to 1-0 on the season.
The Pilots took a 1-0 lead in doubles play when Roman Borvanov and Scott Kennel upset UW’s Daniel Chu and Peter Scharler, 8-1, at the No. 2 doubles spot. Washington fought back with a pair of wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles positions taking the doubles point. Portland senior Borvanov held off UW sophomore Daniel Chu in the third set earning the Pilots their lone point.
Up next for Portland is a dual match on Sunday, Jan. 23 against University of San Francisco at 12:00 p.m. at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
