The University of Portland’s women’s basketball team lost a 67-56 decision to the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon at the Chiles Center. With the loss, Portland falls to 6-14 on the year and 1-6 in WCC action. The Bulldogs improve to 18-2, 7-0 in WCC play.
Gonzaga’s Anne Bailey, who was an efficient six-for-eight from the field and seven-for-seven from the line, led all scorers with 19 points. The Bulldogs’ Ashley Burke chipped in with 18 points. Forward Amy Botto led all Pilots with 16 points, while Jamie Medley was a rebound shy of a double-double. Pilot guard Whitney Grant tied a season high with five assists.
After the two teams traded baskets in the early going of the first half, the Bulldogs went on a 12-4 run to pull away as halftime approached. Gonzaga’s Shannon Mathews and Anne Bailey each broke into double figures in the first half to help the Bulldogs to an eight-point advantage at the break.
The Pilots came out strong in the second half, scoring six consecutive points to cut Gonzaga’s lead to just two, but the Bulldogs regained their momentum with a quick 10-2 run. After trailing by as many as 25 points during the second half, Portland mounted a comeback. The Pilots scored 19 of the game’s final 24 points, but ran out of time against Gonzaga, which remains undefeated in WCC action.
Gonzaga was 25-for-62 (.403) from the field, while Portland hit on 24 of their 72 (.333) shots. The Pilots were outrebounded 50-37, but turned the ball over just 16 times to Gonzaga’s 24.
Portland’s next game is on Thursday, February 3 at Santa Clara. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
