Without dropping a single set, the University of Portland’s men’s tennis team overpowered the Eagles of Eastern Washington, 7-0, Sunday afternoon at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center. With the shutout, the Pilots move to 3-1 in dual play, while the Eagles fall to 0-2.

Portland jumped on Eastern Washington early on in doubles play, winning all three matches for the 1-0 lead. Scott Kennel and Roman Borvanov were 8-2 winners at the top doubles position, while Colby Jager and Josh Roach earned an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles. Matt Loucks and Timothy Chang completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 victory at No. 3 doubles.

No. 111 ranked junior Loucks cruised at the No. 1 singles position, defeating EWU’s Patrick Millican, 6-l, 6-0. Portland junior Redpath expanded the Pilots’ lead to 3-0 with a straight set victory over the Eagles’ Brian Garfield at No. 2 singles. Also earning straight-set wins were junior Strom at No. 3 singles, junior Jager at No. 4, sophomore Kennel in the fifth singles slot, and freshman Chang, a 6-2, 6-4 winner at sixth singles.

“We have some good momentum going,” said Head Coach Aaron Gross. “We played well today all the way through the line-up. Their program is really improving. I am glad our guys did not take them lightly. I really look forward to a good test with St. Mary’s on Tuesday.”

The Pilot men continue their play at home when they take on St. Mary’s Tues., Feb. 1 at the LP Tennis Center. The match is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start.
