Christine Sinclair scores for the 15th consecutive game, matching the 15-year-old NCAA record. Penn State’s Tiffany Weimer also ties the mark.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - University of Portland senior striker Christine Sinclair tallied two goals and assisted on the third as the Pilots rolled to a 3-0 shutout of Loyola Marymount in West Coast Conference women’s soccer action Friday night at Sullivan Field. The Pilots (14-0-0, 2-0-0 WCC) remain as one of only two teams in the nation with a perfect record, while the Lions (4-7-3, 0-2-0 WCC) have dropped four of their last five decisions.
Sinclair continued her assault on the school, WCC and NCAA record books with her eighth multi-goal game of the season. The Burnaby, B.C. native moved past former Pilot standout Shannon MacMillan (1992-95) as the conference’s all-time points leader. Sinclair entered the game with 218, trailing MacMillan by only one point. She finished the night by matching the NCAA record for consecutive games with a goal scored (15) and is accompanied on the list by Penn State senior forward Tiffany Weimer. Weimer scored in the first half of a 1-0 victory at Ohio State - minutes before Sinclair’s first goal of the day - to maintain her streak and improve the Nittany Lions’ record to 15-0 on the season.
Sinclair’s five-point performance on Friday moved her into eighth place in NCAA Division I history with 223 career points. She now has 26 goals on the season which matches her career-best, set during Portland’s run to the 2002 NCAA title. Her 59 points are also a career-high.
The record-tying goal occured in the 33rd minute as senior defender Kelsy Hollenbeck sent a cross from the right sideline into the center of the penalty box. Sinclair found some space and headed home the service into the upper right for a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore midfielder Angie Woznuk tallied in the 52nd minute as Sinclair laid a pass off from inside the penalty area. Woznuk settled left of the arc and rocketed a shot to the upper left for a 2-0 UP advantage. It was Woznuk’s second goal of 2005 and Sinclair’s seventh assist.
The scoring was capped in the 64th minute on an All-America connection between seniors Lindsey Huie and Sinclair. Huie lofted a corner kick from the right side to Sinclair at the far post. Her header was directed back to the low left and crossed the goal line before a Lions’ defender could clear the ball.
Sinclair was substituted off in the 67th minute and the Pilots went on to earn their 10th shutout of the season. Portland sophomore goalkeeper Cori Alexander made three saves in logging her seventh clean sheet of 2005. The Pilots held a 17-5 shot advantage and put 10 shots on goal to LMU’s three.
