SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Senior forward Hector Guzman scored twice for the ninth-ranked Santa Clara Broncos who held off an aggressive Portland attack to defeat the Pilots, 3-0, in a West Coast Conference match Friday night at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. The loss drops the Pilots to 3-6-1 overall on the year and 1-3-0 in the conference. The Broncos improve to 9-3-0 (3-1-0 WCC).
The Pilots recorded five shots on the night, four of them on goal. Santa Clara keeper Kevin Sweeny made four saves to record his fourth shutout this season. Pilot keeper John Fastabend, who made his first career start between the posts for Portland, was solid in the net and recorded five saves. The Broncos totaled 15 shots for the game.
Both teams had good opportunities in the first half with the Pilots Bryan Irwin getting the game’s first good look at the 6:00 mark. Irwin went one-on-one with Sweeny who was able to make the save on Irwin’s shot from the right side.
Santa Clara countered about 10 minutes later and capitalized when Guzman found the top right corner of the net in the 17th minute to give Santa Clara the early 1-0 lead. The assist went to Kelechi Igwe.
Guzman scored goal number two moments later when he found the net at 23:34. The goal is Guzman’s fourth on the year, with the assists going to Keith Devey and Matt Hatzke.
The Pilots had another great chance at 31:31 when freshman forward Alex Elliott was on the receiving end of a nice cross from Irwin into the box. Sweeny again was able to make the save. Elliott, who leads the Pilots with three goals this season, had three shots and two shots on goal for the game.
Neither team was able to gain the advantage in a hard-fought second half until Santa Clara got its final goal in the 89th minute from Ryan Wolf. Wolf went low for his first goal this season.
Portland got another solid performance from its underclassmen as the starting line-up featured four freshmen and four sophomores. Three of the four Pilots who saw action off the bench were also underclassmen.
The Pilots stay in the Bay Area for another conference match as they travel to San Francisco to face USF on Sunday at 2 p.m. The No. 21 Dons tied Gonzaga 1-1 on Friday night.
