SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Freshman forward Brayton Knapp scored 33 seconds into the second overtime period as the Portland Pilots defeated the No. 21 San Francisco Dons, 2-1, in West Coast Conference match Sunday at Negoesco Stadium. The win snaps a two-game losing streak for the Pilots and improves their record to 4-6-1 overall and 2-3-0 in the WCC. USF drops to 6-4-2 and 2-2-1 in the conference.
Knapp scored his second goal of the season at 100:33 from six yards out. Senior Sean Babcock found Knapp near the left post from the top of the box. Knapp beat USF keeper Geremy Uhl in a one-on-one opportunity and sent his shot into the far corner. Babcock recorded two assists for the game giving him two this season.
The game was physical as five yellow cards, three to UP and two to the Dons, and two red cards were issued. Portland’s Eric Fredback and San Francisco’s Aaron Chandler were each given a red card at 35:32, meaning the two teams played with ten players for the remainder of the game. Both players will be forced to sit our their next game as well.
The Pilots took a 1-0 lead just before halftime when freshman forward Steven Hosseinmardi came off the bench and scored his first collegiate goal. The score came when Babcock sent a free kick towards the far post from the left side. Hosseinmardi was there to punch it in as Babcock picked up the assist.
The Pilot defense was able to hold off the Dons’ attack until San Francisco got the equalizer with less than five minutes to go in the game. Cameron Kolovos’ sent a cross into the box which was flicked on by Brandon McDonald. Rob Valentino was in position and headed it into the net at 85:32 for his fourth goal this season. Kolovos and McDonald both picked up the assist.
Pilot keeper Luis Robles made fives saves on the day giving him 220 for his career, fifth-best in school history. Uhl recorded two saves as Portland remains the only WCC team Uhl has yet to record a shutout against in his career.
Four of the Pilots eight total shots were on goal, while USF tallied 15 shots and five on goal. Babcock led the charge for the Pilots with three shots, one on goal.
Portland next plays a two-game set against Gonzaga beginning with a match in Spokane, Wash., on Thursday, October 20. The two teams then square off again in Portland, Ore., on Saturday, October 22.
