PORTLAND, Ore. - Pilot sophomore defender Michael Gavin’s second goal of the season gave Portland a 1-0 victory over Loyola Marymount in a West Coast Conference match Sunday afternoon on Merlo Field in Portland, Ore. The win improves Portland’s record to 3-4-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference. LMU drops to 3-3-2 and 1-1 in the WCC.
Gavin scored the game’s only goal in the 26th minute when he sprinted down the left sideline, beat an LMU defender and fired it into the top right corner from just inside the box. The goal was unassisted and gave UP a 1-0 lead.
LMU held a 13-7 advantage in shots including an 8-2 edge in the second half, but managed just two shots on goal. Pilot junior goalie Luis Robles went the distance between the posts and recorded two saves for his 15th career shutout, fifth best all-time at UP. His 210 career saves also ranks fifth in school history. The Lions’ keeper Robert Flores stopped two of Portland’s three shots on goal.
The Lions applied the pressure in the second half and appeared to tie the game in the 70th minute. Garrett Maloney punched one inside the right post off a feed from Bobby Burling from just in front of the goal, but the goal was called back after an offside call.
Loyola Marymount got another good look at 75:11, but Pilots’ junior keeper Luis Robles made a diving save on Jawaan Delaney’s header from 10 yards out.
Portland again featured a youthful line-up as the Pilots started eight underclassmen, including four freshman. Three freshman also came off the bench for UP. Freshman forward Alex Elliott led the offensive attack with three shots on the day.
The Pilots remain at home this week as they host Saint Mary’s for a conference match on Friday, Oct. 7, at 7:00 p.m. on Merlo Field.
