SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga scored 42 seconds into the second half and held on for a 1-0 win against the University of Portland in a West Coast Conference men’s soccer match on Thursday at Martin Field. The loss drops the Pilots’ overall record to 4-7-1 and 2-4-0 in the WCC. The Bulldogs are now 3-6-3 overall and 1-3-1 in the conference.
Neither team was able to mount a serious challenge on goal in the first half as the Pilots held a 7-5 advantage in shots during the period and a 3-0 edge in shots on goal.
Gonzaga wasted little time scoring the game’s first goal early in the second half. Sophomore Grant Lundberg sent a deep cross from the left side that found sophomore George Josten. Josten was able to finish with a header at 45:42 into the right side of the net for his team-leading seventh goal this season.
Portland had a chance at the equalizer in the 87th minute but freshman Alex Elliott’s header off a Matt Dallman corner kick was wide right.
The Bulldogs only managed two shots on goal as junior Pilot keeper Luis Robles made one save. Gonzaga totaled 14 shots for the game. The Pilots countered with 10 shots and three shots on goal.
Sophomore midfielder Ryan Oakes led the Portland attack with three shots, one on goal. Dallman, Elliott and freshman Steven Hosseinmardi each managed two shots. The Pilots used 16 players throughout the game.
Next up for Portland is another match against the Bulldogs on Saturday at Merlo Field in Portland. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
