Despite a career-high 12 kills from freshman middle Ashley Grayson, the University of Portland’s volleyball team was swept 3-0 by Loyola Marymount on Saturday night.
The Pilots kept each of the three games within reach, losing 30-23, 30-25, and 30-26. The win improves the Lions’ record to 15-6 overall and 3-4 in West Coast Conference action, while Portland falls to 3-16 overall and 0-7 in conference play.
Loyola Marymount was led by Heather Hughes, who recorded a rare triple-double with 12 kills, 27 assists, and 10 digs.
Grayson had a team-high 12 kills on 26 attacks, besting her previous career high of ten which she set last weekend against Saint Mary’s. Jennifer Sheedy and Nicole Thometz recorded 10 kills each for the Pilots. Sheedy connected for a .588 clip during the game.
With 36 assists tonight, Sheena Surplus inched closer to the Pilots’ all-time assists record. She now has 4,140 career assists, just 47 short of the record held by Annie Blackburn.
Portland continues WCC action on Oct. 29 with a home match against Gonzaga (10-14, 2-5 WCC) at the Chiles Center. Match time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
