SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Portland Pilots shutout San Diego for 70 minutes before the Toreros finally broke through and went on to win 1-0 in a West Coast Conference match Friday night at Torero Stadium in San Diego, Calif. The loss drops the Pilots’ overall record to 4-8-2 and 2-5-1 in the conference. San Diego improves to 7-4-3 overall, 3-3-1 in the WCC.
San Diego got off to an aggressive start firing off the game’s first six shots within the first 20 minutes of the contest. Pilot junior keeper Luis Robles was able to make two saves while the rest of the shots sailed wide or high. Portland countered with four shots of its own in the half, but the two teams went into the break tied at 0-0.
After 25 minutes more of scoreless soccer in the second half, Torero sophomore midfielder Dustin Guerrero scored his third goal of the season. Guerrero went far post from 12 yards out on the assist from senior defender Scott Martin and senior defender Calle Rendahl to make the score 1-0 at 70:26.
Portland created some chances throughout the second half but just couldn’t capitalize. Senior forward Patrick Mooney had Portland’s best look in the second half when it appeared he had a goal on a header that was online towards the far post. USD goalie Lance Friesz somehow got there in time to make the save. Mooney’s shot was the only one in the second half for the Pilots as they totaled five shots for the game, one on goal.
San Diego finished the game with 16 shots and five on goal.
Robles finished with four saves for UP giving him 225 for his career, fifth best all-time at Portland. He trails Brent Mayes, who was between the posts for the Pilots from 1980-83, by 25 saves for fourth on the all-time charts.
The Pilots remain in Southern California for another conference match on Sunday. Portland plays Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles, Calif., at 2 p.m. The Lions, who are 5-6-4 overall and 3-3-1 in the WCC, lost 3-2 to Gonzaga on Friday.
