Senior guard Pooh Jeter leads all scorers with 22 points as Portland overcomes slow start for 84-67 victory
PORTLAND, Ore. - Senior guard Pooh Jeter scored 22 points and junior forward Ben Sullivan added 16 points and 10 rebounds as the Portland Pilots defeated the Concordia Cavaliers by an 84-67 margin in an exhibition game Tuesday night at the Chiles Center.
Sophomore forward Marcus Lewis also recorded a double-double for the Pilots with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while senior swingman Donald Wilson added 16 points and seven boards.
Cody Aker and Alex Hartman each tallied 16 points for the Cavaliers, a member of the Cascade Collegiate Conference of the NAIA.
"It was good to get the first effort out of the way," Portland head coach Michael Holton said. "We played hard and learned some important things about our team."
As expected, both teams showed some nerves and were a little rusty throughout as they combined for 52 turnovers. The Cavaliers led a majority of the first half before the Portland front line exposed its size advantage and controlled the paint. The Pilots outscored Concordia 50-24 in the paint and gained a 55-29 edge in rebounds.
Concordia scored the first seven points of the game and held a 32-23 lead with less than four minutes remaining in the first period before the momentum began to shift in the Pilots favor. Portland closed the half 12-1 run as Sullivan started the spurt with an offensive rebound and putback. Jeter drilled a pair of jumpers and a free-throw in the final two minutes to give the Pilots a 35-33 lead.
The game remained close as Concordia forced five second-half ties, the last coming at 9:16 on a jumper by Michael Lay. Portland countered with an 8-0 run capped by a putback from freshman forward Jamie Jones (El Segundo HS, El Segundo, CA) and methodically extended the lead throughout regulation.
In addition to Jones, Portland freshmen Brian McTear, Marcus Carter and junior transfer Kevin Field made their Pilot debuts. Jones finished with two points and three rebounds in 11 minutes; McTear had four points and three steals in 15 minutes; Carter made a pair of free-throws and grabbed two boards in eight minutes and Field got the start at center and finished with six points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots in 23 minutes.
"We can take a lot of positives out of tonight," Holton said. "We scored 50 points in the paint and held Concordia to 36 percent shooting from the floor, which are good indicators of what we are trying to do. Having said that, committing 27 turnovers is not something we will be able to withstand on any other night."
Portland open its regular season schedule at the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer in Lubbock, Texas on Nov. 10-11. The Pilots will open against Georgia Southern on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. (PST) and then face either Texas Tech or San Jose State on Friday. The Pilots home-opener will be against the UC Riverside Highlanders on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m.
