SEATTLE, Wash. - Portland senior midfielder Sean Babcock scored his first goal of the season and the Pilots held on for a 1-0 shutout of Northwest rival Washington Friday evening at Husky Soccer Field. Portland improves to 5-9-2 on the season with the win, while the No. 26 Huskies fall to 9-6-2 overall.
Portland snapped a four-match winless streak with the victory and have now taken the last three matches against UW after beating the Huskies twice last season, including a 5-3 come-from-behind win in the first round of the NCAA playoffs.
The game’s only goal came in the 30th minute as sophomore midfielder Matthew Dallman made a run down the right flank. Dallman raced towards the corner and serviced a cross to Babcock in the middle of the penalty area. Babcock’s shot found the left side netting for the game-winner. It was Dallman’s team-leading fourth assist this season.
The Huskies pressed forward throughout the rest of regulation and racked up a 27-6 edge in shots, but UP clamped down behind the solid play of junior goalkeeper Luis Robles and a stable defensive scheme. Robles made seven saves in recording his fourth shutout of the 2005 campaign and 16th of his career. He lowered his goals-against average to 0.98 for the season, the lowest single-season GAA during his three years on The Bluff.
Babcock and Dallman each had two shot attempts for the visiting Pilots, while Spencer Schmidt led all players with six attempts for the Huskies.
Portland returns to West Coast Conference play with a game at Saint Mary’s on Sunday, Nov. 6, in Moraga, Calif., at 2 p.m. Portland will then conclude the regular season with a pair of games at Merlo Field the following weekend. The Pilots host San Francisco on Thursday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. and then take on conference-leading Santa Clara on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m.
