The Pilot senior backcourt of Pooh Jeter and Darren Cooper combine for 46 points as Portland beats Oregon for only the second time in last 40 years
PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland senior point guard Pooh Jeter scored 25 and senior guard Darren Cooper netted 21 as the Portland Pilots topped the Oregon Ducks 80-72 in a nonconference men’s basketball game Thursday night at the Chiles Center. The win is just the second for Portland over Oregon in the last 40 years, both wins coming during the Michael Holton era. With the win, the Pilots, who previously beat Portland State and Oregon State this season, make it a clean sweep of the Oregon schools for the first time since the 1956-57 season.
The Pilots, who shot 51.1 percent for the game, snapped a two-game skid and improve to 5-7 on the season. Jeter shot nine of 17 from the field and made three of seven three-pointers en route to his game-high in points. Cooper hit his first 12 free throws, 11 in the first half, and went 15 of 16 for the game. Senior forward Ben Sullivan added 12 points.
Oregon (6-5) was led by junior point guard Aaron Brooks’ 13 points. Forwards Adam Zahn and Malik Hairston each scored 11.
Portland extended a 42-35 halftime lead to as many as 12 points early in the second period, but the Ducks narrowed the margin to 68-63 on a free throw by Hairston at 2:46.
Sullivan then hit a crucial three-pointer at the end of the shotclock to bring the lead to 71-63. Four straight Oregon free throws made it 71-67 with a minute remaining in regulation, but the Pilots broke the full court press and Sullivan made a lay-up to push the lead back to six points. The Pilots made six of their final seven free throw attempts to ice the game.
"I think we struggled in spots throughout the first half, but I was proud that our guys kept their composure," Holton said. "This is a good win against a very good team, but we have a long way to go."
Portland outscored Oregon 34-28 in the paint and 26-10 in points off turnovers. The Ducks held a slim, 34-32 rebounding advantage and 12-10 edge in second chance points. The Pilots shot 51.1 percent from the field compared to 43.4 percent for Oregon.
The Ducks stormed out of the gates with a 7-0 run and led for the first 10 minutes and 24 seconds before UP took a 17-16 lead on a Jeter jumper. The lead changed three times before the half with Portland taking the lead for good with 4:10 remaining in the period on a three-point play by Cooper.
Oregon had won 24 of the last 25 meetings between the programs with the lone loss coming on December 2, 2001 in Holton’s fifth game as Portland’s coach.
"It feels good to be the team of Oregon," an elated Jeter said afterwards. "The seniors on this team were 0-3 against (Oregon), so it was a great win for us."
"I’m glad we’re in a state where all the Division I programs have the opportunity to play each other every year," Holton added. "I think it’s good for the state and good for college basketball as a whole."
The Pilots will take a brief hiatus for the Holidays before returning to action against the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos on Wednesday, Dec. 28 at 7 p.m. in Santa Barbara. Portland will conclude the non-conference season at Cal Poly on Friday, Dec. 30 at 7 p.m.
NOTES: Holton and the Pilots gathered 125 jackets as part of a coat drive at the game. The coats will be given to the Salvation Army and distributed to those in need during the winter months.
