The 73rd-ranked University of Portland men’s tennis team extended their winning streak to six matches, handing Gonzaga a 7-0 loss at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center Sunday morning. The Pilots did not lose a set moving to 6-1 on the season, 3-0 in WCC play, while the Bulldogs fall to 1-6, 0-1.
Portland took the lead early on capturing the doubles point. At the top doubles position, Pilot juniors Matt Loucks and James Redpath improved to 5-1 as a duo with an 8-2 win over Gonzaga’s Bryce Cooper and Brett Womack. Portland’s tandem of Roman Borvanov and Scott Kennel remain undefeated, 7-0 at No. 2 doubles recording an 8-3 win over the Bulldogs' Dru Ernst and Marco Pineda, while teammates Colby Jager and Josh Roach clinched the doubles point for the Pilots with their 8-3 win over Cooper Fratt and Robert Penney.
In singles play, Portland continued their dominance recording straight-set victories at all six positions. No. 111 ranked Loucks cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 win over Ernst at the No. 1 singles slot, while at the No. 2 spot Borvanov improved his unblemished singles record to 6-0 defeating Womack, 7-5, 6-0. Redpath, Alex Strom, and Jager also recorded straight-set victories at the No. 3, 4, and 5 positions respectively; while teammate Kennel rounded out the sweep with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Jesse Goldsmith in the No. 6 singles spot.
“We were very businesslike in our approach today,” said Head Coach Aaron Gross. “We were not spectacular, but we were solid. It was nice to see (Alex) Strom and (Colby) Jager pick up wins. They have both been struggling a little confidence-wise, but hitting the ball well in practice. I think they are heading in the right direction. We are very pleased to be 6-1. We want to finish up February strong. We are looking ahead to March and some exciting challenges ahead.”
The Pilot men continue play at home on Friday, February 25, when they host Utah State at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.
