Portland’s men’s tennis team (7-1, 3-0 WCC) extended its winning streak to seven matches with a 7-0 victory over the Utah State Aggies (4-9, 1-1 Big West) Friday afternoon at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center.
The Pilots, who climbed two positions to No. 71 in this week’s Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, boasted an almost unblemished match. The only Portland loss of the day was in the No. 3 doubles position, where Colby Jager and Joshua Roach lost to the Aggies’ Brad Ferguson and Hannes Schenk.
“Overall, I felt we were flat in the doubles,” head coach Aaron Gross said. “Though we took care of business in the singles, we can still play better. We need to challenge ourselves more.”
Roman Borvanov, who dispatched Hannes Schenk 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 2 singles position, remains undefeated in both singles and doubles play. Through the first eight matches of the 2005 season, he sports a 7-0 singles record and an 8-0 doubles record with partner Scott Kennel. Matthew Loucks and James Redpath both have a 7-1 singles record and have not lost since the opening match of the season. Paired in doubles play, Loucks and Redpath share a 6-1 record.
The Pilots will be in action next on Sunday, when they will take on the University of Nevada Wolfpack (3-2) at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center. Match time is scheduled for 9:00 a.m.
