The No. 71-ranked University of Portland’s men’s tennis team (8-1, 3-0 WCC) continued its winning ways with a decisive victory over Nevada (4-3, 0-0 WAC) on Sunday afternoon.
The Pilots burst out of the gates by sweeping the three doubles matches. Roman Borvanov and Scott Kennel, battling in the No. 2 position, improved their season record to an impressive 9-0. After dropping their first doubles match of the season, Matthew Loucks and James Redpath now sport a 7-1 record.
Portland then took five of the six singles matches to post a 6-1 win over the visiting Wolfpack. Competing in the No. 2 singles position, Roman Borvanov extended his winning streak to nine matches, and has yet to drop a match this dual season. Matthew Loucks and James Redpath each boast eight-match winning streaks, and Scott Kennel has claimed victory in his last seven outings.
“It was nice to take care of business this weekend,” head coach Aaron Gross said. “I think it will take a little getting used to being a ranked team and having a bit of a bullseye on our back.”
The Pilots’ next action will be on Sunday, March 6, when they host Linfield College and Whitman College at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center. Matches are scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., respectively.
