SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Michelle Cozad scored 19 points to lead six Santa Clara players in double figures as the Broncos erupted for a 95-58 victory over Portland Thursday night at the Leavey Center. Senior Jamie Medley recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Pilots, but Santa Clara jumped out to a 46-28 halftime lead and never looked back.
The 95 points scored by Santa Clara exceeded the previous Portland opponent high this season of 93, set by the Broncos on Jan. 8 at the Chiles Center. The Broncos (11-10, 5-3 WCC) shot 50 percent from the field compared to Portland’s 33 percent, and gained a 43-31 advantage in rebounds.
The Pilots (6-15, 1-7 WCC) committed 26 turnovers leading to 34 Santa Clara points, while the Broncos got a big lift with a 48-5 edge in bench points.
Santa Clara scored the first nine points of the game and pushed the lead to 18 on an Ashley Gonnerman jumper midway through the first half. The Pilots closed the gap to 13 on Jamie Medley’s three-pointer, but Chandice Cronk hit a trey and two free-throws to push the margin back to 18. The team’s would trade hoops as the Broncos took a comfortable 46-28 lead into the break.
SCU made two buckets to start the second half and the deficit got no closer than 19 points after the break. Gonnerman capped a 15-2 run with a pair from the charity stripe to make it 72-48 with 11:39 left and the Broncos would lead by as much as 41 points late in the game.
Cronk finished with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Gonnerman scored 13 off the bench for SCU. Tori Markey (12), Anna Martin (11) and Sara Majors (10) all came off the bench and reached double-figures.
Botto tallied 19 points and six rebounds, knocking down 9-of-10 from the free-throw line for the Pilots. All five Portland starters committed at least four turnovers in extended minutes as the injury-depleted lineup went only nine deep.
Portland will next play at Saint Mary’s on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 7:05 p.m.
