The No. 75-ranked University of Portland men’s tennis team (11-1, 3-0 WCC) squeaked by Yale (3-7) by a score of 4-3 on Thursday afternoon in Boise, Idaho. The red hot Pilots have now won 11 consecutive matches.
After sweeping all three doubles matches, the Pilots and the Bulldogs split the six singles matches. Portland’s Roman Borvanov won 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 2 singles position, improving his dual record to an unblemished 10-0 on the season. The tandem of Borvanov and Scott Kennel, now 11-0 on the season, won 8-4 in the No. 2 doubles position.
James Redpath continued his dominant ways in the No. 3 singles position. The New Zealand native defeated Yale’s Milosz Gudzowski 6-3, 7-5 and has won his last 11 matches. Portland’s final singles win was recorded by captain Colby Jager, who won 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 5 position to improve his dual record to 9-3 and extend his winning streak to six matches.
The Pilots will look to continue their streaking ways on Friday afternoon as Portland takes on No. 41 Boise State (15-6). The Broncos will be Portland’s third nationally ranked opponent of the 2005 campaign. The Pilots lost to No. 21 Washington in their season opener back on January 21, but beat No. 74 UC Santa Barbara on February 11.
