The No. 75-ranked University of Portland men’s tennis team (11-3, 3-0 WCC) was edged by No. 47 UNLV (11-4) on Sunday afternoon in Boise, Idaho. The loss is the Pilots’ second consecutive after posting an 11-1 record to start the 2005 season.
UNLV started the match off by seizing the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Portland’s duo of Matthew Loucks and James Redpath recorded a victory at the No. 1 position, improving its dual season record to an impressive 10-1.
The two teams then split the six singles matches, giving UNLV a 4-3 victory. Portland’s wins came in the No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 singles positions, where Roman Borvanov (11-1), James Redpath (12-2), and Alex Strom (7-7) all defeated their Runnin’ Rebel counterparts.
Portland was again without the full services of regular No. 1 singles player Loucks, who was forced into retirement after falling behind 4-1 in the first set of his match.
The Pilots’ next match is scheduled for Wednesday, when the squad will continue its string of ranked opponents by taking on No. 65 Oregon (7-8, 0-1 PAC-10) in Eugene, Ore. Match time is slated for 3:00 p.m.
