PORTLAND, Ore. -- Oregon State crossed three runs in the eighth inning, completing a come-from-behind 7-5 victory over Portland Tuesday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field. Oregon State (17-3) entered the game ranked 18th nationally according to Baseball America. Portland (9-13) has now dropped four straight and lost its first game of the season when leading after seven innings.
Tyler Graham singled and Geoff Wagner walked with one out in the eighth to start the OSU rally. Portland brought in sophomore reliever Josh Roberts - the WCC Co-Pitcher of the Week two weeks ago after recording three consecutive saves against Pacific - to try and close the door.
Roberts forced a possible double play grounder, but Pilot third baseman Jason Krohn couldn’t handle a tough hop and the bases were loaded. Mitch Canham lofted a ball into the left-center gap, but UP left fielder Justin Pierce fully extended for a spectacular diving catch. Graham scored on the sacrifice fly and then Shea McFeely dealt the big blow with a two-run double down the left field line.
Ball (1-2) took the loss for Portland, which sent seven pitchers to the mound in typical Johnny All-Staff style. Nate Fogle (3-1) was credited with the win after tossing the final 3.2 innings, giving up just one hit and striking out four.
The Pilots grabbed the early lead when sophomore center fielder Justin Ehlers took OSU starter Daniel Turpen deep for a three-run homer in the third inning. It was Ehlers’ first home run as a Pilot and just Portland’s second hit of the day. The Pilots added two more in the fourth, one on a wild pitch and the second on a sacrifice fly from Gustaf Little.
Oregon State chipped away with a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to make it 5-4 and set up the three-run eighth.
Portland managed just four hits on the afternoon, while OSU tallied 14 in the game. Graham led the Beavers with four hits, while Canham, McFeely and Mike Lissman added two each.
The Pilots will return to West Coast Conference action at Pepperdine beginning this Thursday at 2 p.m. Portland will play three in Malibu before returning to Joe Etzel Field for a non-conference game against Pacific Lutheran on Monday, March 28 at 2 p.m.
