The Portland Pilots (5-8) lost their second consecutive game at the S.P.O.R.T. Banana Belt Tournament, falling 13-1 to the Gonzaga Bulldogs (7-5) on Saturday afternoon. The loss dropped the Pilots’ tournament record to 1-2.
Portland’s only run of the game came from the bat of right fielder Justin Pierce, who hit a second-inning home run to straightaway center field that gave the Pilots a brief 1-0 lead. The remaining three hits were provided by third baseman Jason Krohn, who continues to wield a hot bat.
Gonzaga scored two runs in the bottom half of the second to seize the lead, and blew the game wide open with a six-run fourth inning that chased Portland starter Ari Ronick. The Bulldogs were led offensively by catcher Kiel Thibault, who belted two home runs and added a double.
Ronick took the loss for the Pilots, dropping his season record to 1-2. Patrick Donovan (3-1) was credited with the victory for Gonzaga. Joe Jones made his second relief appearance of the season and allowed four runs on two hits in four innings of work.
Portland’s final contest in the tournament is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon, when they will take on host Lewis-Clark State College at Harris Field in Lewiston, Idaho.
