LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Loyola Marymount scored five runs in the sixth inning to record a comeback win for the second day in a row and defeat Portland 8-4 Sunday afternoon at Page Stadium. Junior outfielder Justin Pierce went 2-for-4 with three RBI for the Pilots (12-20, 3-9 WCC), while Chris Pettit continued his hot hitting with a 3-for-4 day at the plate for the Lions (13-18, 6-5 WCC).
Pettit drove in seven runs on Saturday in the leadoff spot and moved to the fifth spot in the lineup on Sunday, scoring two runs. Portland opened the series with a 3-2 win on Friday, but LMU followed with a 21-9 rout on Saturday before taking the series Sunday.
For the third consecutive game, the Pilots took the early lead as Justin Ehlers led off with a single in the first and later scored on a groundout by Travis Vetters.
LMU evened the score on Jon Oller’s second homer of the series in the second, but the Pilots tacked on two more in the third as Pierce plated Joe Watson and Jason Krohn with a single to left.
The Lions tied it at 3-3 in the fourth as Sean Dovel and Anthony Soto drove in runs. UP regained the lead in the fifth as Pierce doubled home Vetters with a shot to deep left field.
Pilot sophomore right-hander Sean Sargent ran into trouble in the sixth, allowing three straight singles. Sophomore Josh Roberts came on in relief with one out and runners on second and third and promptly recorded a strikeout. Roberts then allowed a walk and hit Eric Farris to bring home the go-ahead run. A two-run single by James Cooper and a wild pitch allowed the final run for LMU in the inning.
Roberts closed out the final two frames without incident, but LMU reliever Blake Feaser (3-2) tossed four scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win. Sargent (2-4) took the loss for UP, going 5.1 innings and allowing six runs on 10 hits. LMU freshman starter Brad Meyers tossed five frames and surrendered four runs on seven base hits.
Watson finished the day 2-for-4 at the dish with a run scored for the Pilots. Vetters extended his hitting streak to 11 games with his single in the fifth. Oller and Elvis Herrera tallied two hits each for the Lions.
The Pilots will next travel to Oregon State for a non-conference contest on Tuesday, April 12 at 5 p.m.
