Gonzaga plated a run in the top of the sixth inning to break a scoreless tie, and added two runs in both the seventh and ninth innings to cruise to a 5-1 victory over the Pilots on Sunday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field. Portland (12-22, 3-11 WCC) was led offensively by a 2-for-3 outing from Jason Krohn, while Scott Campbell had three hits for visiting Gonzaga (22-13, 9-4 WCC).
Portland starter Ari Ronick shut out the Bulldogs for the first five innings of the game, but Gonzaga struck in the sixth inning after a Darin Holcomb double scored Scott Campbell all the way from first base. Gonzaga then scored two runs off the freshman lefthander in the seventh. Ronick conceded just two earned runs over 6 1/3 innings, striking out six.
The belligerent Portland weather then decided to have a say in the game’s outcome. A brief downpour forced a 25-minute rain delay in the middle of the seventh inning.
Portland scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the eighth, when Joe Watson scored Gustaf Little from third base with a groundout to the right side of the infield. The Bulldogs added insurance in the top of the ninth, scoring two runs to extend their lead to four.
Gonzaga starter Patrick Donovan went 7 2/3 innings, allowing just five runs and walking only two. His no-hit bid was broken up in the sixth inning after Billy Krause belted a single over the head of Gonzaga shortstop Aaron McGuinness. Donovan (5-4) was credited with the win, while Ronick (2-6) pitched well in the loss. Brandon Harmon earned his second save of the season for Gonzaga.
Travis Vetters had his 12-game hitting streak ended after going 0-for-4 against Gonzaga pitching.
The teams will play the final game of the three-game set on Monday at 12:00 p.m. at Joe Etzel Field. Portland will then host Washington in a non-conference game on Tuesday before returning to West Coast Conference action at home against San Diego next weekend.
