The University of Portland’s men’s tennis team (18-5) suffered a 4-0 defeat by the No. 31-ranked San Diego Toreros (16-5) on Saturday afternoon in the semifinals of the 2005 West Coast Conference Championship.
The hotly-contested doubles point went to San Diego. Roman Borvanov and Alex Strom won their match 8-4 at the No. 3 position, but the Toreros won two close matches in the No. 1 and No. 2 positions to take the point.
With the doubles point in hand, San Diego then ran over the bottom half of the Pilots’ singles lineup to clinch the dual. The Toreros claimed victory in the No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 positions in straight sets. San Diego will face No. 1 seed Pepperdine, ranked No. 7 in the nation, in the final.
After the dual was clinched, the remaining matches were pulled off the court. Roman Borvanov had a one set lead against No. 11 Pierrick Ysern in the No. 1 position, while James Redpath was up one set on Mirza Koristovic in the No. 3 position.
The Pilots will move on to play No. 4 seed Santa Clara in the third-place game. Match time is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
