The University of Portland men’s tennis team won its third straight match on Friday morning, recording a 6-1 win over the University of Montana Grizzlies (4-8, 1-1 Big Sky). The victory improves the Pilots’ record to 15-4 on the season.
The Pilots swept all three matches to earn the doubles point. The tandem of Matthew Loucks and James Redpath won a tiebreaker 10-4 in the No. 1 doubles position, improving its record to 15-1 on the season. In the No. 2 position, Colby Jager and Scott Kennel won 8-5, while Roman Borvanov and Alex Strom posted an 8-3 victory in the No. 3 position.
Portland then won five of the six singles matches. Borvanov won 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 2 position, and has now lost just one game in his last four sets. Redpath swept a tiebreaker in the second set against Montana’s Stuart Wing in the No. 3 position, improving his 2005 dual record to 17-2. Strom, Jager, and Kennel also won singles matches for the Pilots.
The Pilots’ 15 wins thus far this season represents the program’s highest total since the 1997 squad posted 19 victories.
Portland will finish its regular season with games on Saturday and Sunday against Idaho and No. 70 Montana State University. Both games will be held in Boise, Idaho.
