LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Chris Pettit drove in seven runs including a fifth inning grand slam as Loyola Marymount evened the weekend series with a 21-9 victory over Portland Saturday afternoon at Page Stadium. Junior outfielder Travis Vetters went 4-for-5, while Jason Krohn and Matthew Peters hit home runs for the Pilots (12-19, 3-8 WCC), but LMU (12-18, 5-5 WCC) had eight players record multiple hits on the day.
Portland grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the first as Vetters and Justin Pierce tallied RBI-singles. LMU bounced back with a three-run second highlighted by Sean Dovel’s two-run triple.
Krohn tied the game at 3-3 in the third with a leadoff blast, his third of the season, but LMU regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning with another run.
The Pilots tallied four runs in the fourth, two coming on a double from Vetters to right center.
The Lions scored one in the fourth and then erupted with a seven-run fifth inning to take the lead for good. The Lions hit back-to-back-to-back home runs from Kyle Mura, Evan Shahak and Jon Oller before Pettit unloaded the bases with a bomb to left field.
LMU scored one in the seventh and extended the margin with eight more in the eighth.
Peters belted his team-leading fifth homer, a two-run shot in the eighth. The junior first baseman finished the day 2-for-4. Krohn also was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI. Vetters’ four-hit day raised his season batting average to .310 and he is hitting a blistering .421 in conference play.
Pilot freshman Ari Ronick (2-5) suffered the loss, allowing eight runs in 4.1 innings of work. LMU reliever Andy Beal (1-0) tossed 4.2 innings out the bullpen to pick up the win.
Eric Farris was 4-of-6 with two runs and two RBI for the Lions. Elvis Herrera finished 4-for-4 with four runs scored, while Dovel and Anthony Soto tallied three hits each.
The teams will conclude the series at Page Stadium on Sunday at 1 p.m.
