PORTLAND, Ore. -- University of Portland head men’s golf coach Bill Winter has announced that Blake Carley of Boise, Idaho and Timberline High School has signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the Pilots next Fall.
Carley recently won the 2005 Boise City Invitational High School Tournament at Quail Hollow Golf Club with a round of 67. He was the medalist in the four of seven dual matches during his senior year at Timberline, posting a nine hole dual match stroke average of 35.68.
Carley was the 2003 Rocky Mountain Section Westfield PGA Junior champion, shooting rounds of 66 and 67, thus earning a berth in the national championship. He has participated the past two years throughout the western United States, in the PGA Junior Series, International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT), as well as the America Junior Golf Association (AJGA) with several top 20 finishes.
In July of 2004, Carley finished runner up in the Rocky Mountain PGA Treasure Valley Championship at 6-under par 138 (68-70). He concluded the 2004 AJGA season at the Tri Cities Junior Tournament with a 1-under par 215 (72-74-69).
Carley becomes the second prep golfer to commit to Portland for next Fall, joining previously signed Brad Blakley (Spokane, Wash., Gonzaga Prep HS).
The 2005 Portland golf squad finished fourth at the West Coast Conference Championships, the highest finish since 2001. Senior Mike McCabe capped his impressive stint at UP with a 74.6 career scoring average, second best in recorded school history. McCabe led the team with a 73.41 scoring average last year, but is the only Pilot not returning next season.
