SEATTLE, Wash. - Freshman Alex Elliott scored his second goal of the season to lead Portland past Wisconsin, 1-0, on the final day of the Husky Fever Classic in Seattle, Wash. The Pilots snapped a three-game losing streak with the win and improve to 2-3-1 overall, while Wisconsin drops to 4-4 on the season with the loss.
Elliott, a member of the Canadian Under-20 Men’s National Team, put away the game-winner in the 51st minute. Sophomore midfielder Matthew Dallman drove a low cross to Elliott at the top of the goal box. Elliott took one touch and then drilled his attempt to the right of Wisconsin keeper Mike Hood. It was Dallman’s second assist in as many games and team-leading third on the season.
The Pilots controlled the run of play and peppered the Badgers’ goal with a 25-5 edge in shot attempts, including an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal. Hood recorded seven saves for Wisconsin and UP goalie Luis Robles stopped three shots to preserve his second shutout of the season.
A youthful lineup took the pitch for the Pilots on Sunday as eight underclassmen earned starting nods. Freshmen Bryan Irwin, Drew Chostek and Brayton Knapp each started for the first time in their respective careers, joining fellow frosh Elliott and four other sophomores. The formula worked as the Pilots created the most opportunities this year with season highs in shot attempts and shots on goal.
Elliott and Dallman each tallied four shots, while senior midfielder Sean Babcock matched the Badgers’ shot total with five attempts.
The game was played aggressively as seven cautions were distributed - four to UP and three to UW - and a combined 42 fouls called.
The Pilots return home next weekend and begin West Coast Conference action against San Deigo on Friday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m., followed by a 2:30 matchup with Loyola Marymount on Sunday, Oct. 2 at Merlo Field. Sunday’s game is part of a Pilot doubleheader, as the women’s team hosts Oregon State at noon.
