SPOKANE, Wash. – The University of Portland’s women’s basketball team received a game-high 25 points from senior point guard Whitney Grant on Sunday afternoon, but the Pilots suffered a 67-60 loss in a road West Coast Conference game against Gonzaga.
Grant has now broken the 20-point barrier in four of the past five games, and has led the Pilots in scoring in each of those five contests. She buried four three-pointers and added five rebounds, four steals, and three assists to her point total against Gonzaga.
The Pilots were within striking distance of Gonzaga until about midway through the first half, when Grant drilled a trey to cut the Bulldogs’ lead to just one. But Gonzaga went on a 9-0 run to make the score 22-13. The Pilots cut the lead to six just a few minutes before the half, but that would be the closest they would come to Gonzaga.
Ashley Anderson led Gonzaga with a double-double, posting 24 points and a game-high 11 rebounds in 34 minutes on the floor. Sophomore Meagan Bermingham helped the Pilots with 13 points on efficient 6-for-10 shooting.
Gonzaga was sent to the free-throw line 31 times during the game, but were only able to convert 17 of them. The Pilots were whistled for 24 personal fouls, while Gonzaga was caught 16 times. Portland hit 12 of its 18 attempts from the charity stripe.
Gonzaga’s record improves to 10-12 and 5-2 in WCC action. Portland falls to 4-16 overall and 1-6 in WCC play.
Portland will now head south for a two-game road trip to Saint Mary’s (Thursday, 7:00 p.m.) and Santa Clara (Saturday, 2:00 p.m.). The Pilots’ next home game is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 11 at 2:00 p.m. against Gonzaga
