The UP women’s soccer team and star forward Christine Sinclair are among the winners of the 2005 Oregon Sports Awards
BEAVERTON, Ore. -- University of Portland women’s soccer player Christine Sinclair was named the Bill Hayward Female Amateur Athlete of the Year and the Pilots’ women’s soccer team shared the George Pasero Team of the Year award with the Oregon State baseball team at the 54th annual Oregon Sports Awards held at the Nike World Campus on Sunday evening.
Sinclair, who set an NCAA single-season record with 39 goals in leading Portland to its second NCAA title in four years, also won the Bill Hayward Award in 2002 after the Pilots won their first championship. She finished her remarkable career as the NCAA’s second all-time in career goal scorer with 110 and became just the third woman to win consecutive Hermann Trophies.
The Pilots team joined North Carolina as the only women’s soccer programs to ever complete an unbeaten season with a championship. Portland finished with a 24-0-2 mark in setting a new school record in wins and also rewriting NCAA attendance records with 40,841 fans taking in 12 home matches.
Other University of Portland finalists included soccer players Lindsey Huie and Megan Rapinoe for the Bill Hayward Award; women’s soccer coach Garrett Smith for the Slats Gill Sportsperson of the Year Award, current freshman harrier Zuber Ahmed for the Johnny Carpenter Prep Athlete of the Year and former UP men’s soccer standout and current U.S. National Team goalkeeper Kasey Keller.
