The Pilots and Broncos combine for a Portland school record of 26 three-pointers as Santa Clara holds on for the win
PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots could not overcome 33 points and a Santa Clara and Chiles Center record of nine three-pointers by Ashley Graham as Santa Clara claimed a 74-73 West Coast Conference win Sunday afternoon. Graham, a junior guard, went nine of 13 from behind the three-point arc to help the Broncos set a school record of 18 three-pointers, and improve to 7-8 this season, 1-1 in the WCC.
Junior center Rachel Warren led five Pilots in double figures with 18 points. Portland drops its seventh straight game and falls to 3-12 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
Freshman forward Allyson Sievers had a career-high 14 points at the half and finished with 17 points. Senior point guard Whitney Grant scored 12, senior forward Rose Sauer finished with 11 and sophomore Meagan Bermingham netted 10. Bermingham also dished out a career-high eight assists, seven in the first half. Sauer had a career high of seven assists as the Pilots totaled 22 assists on their 27 field goals.
The game went down to the wire with the Pilots trailing by one with possession of the ball in the closing seconds. A Sauer three-point attempt was blocked out of bounds by senior forward Michelle Cozad with four seconds left. After inbounding the ball, Portland was unable to get off a shot as the clock expired.
Portland owned the early part of the first half as the Pilots built a double-digit lead. Up 12-11 eight minutes into the game, Portland went on a 13-0 run. Sievers scored three-straight lay-ups and totaled eight points during the run that gave UP a 25-11 lead with nine minutes left. Moments later, a Sauer jumper made it 29-13 at 8:19.
The lead grew as Sievers continued to have her way in the point. Back-to-back-to-back lay-ups from Sievers made it 35-17, Portland’s biggest lead of the game.
Santa Clara then found its stroke as the Broncos hit four three-pointers in the closing minutes to help pull within 39-37 at the break.
Portland held the advantage coming out of the locker room and scored the first seven points of the second half to build a ten-point lead. A Sauer three from the top of the key made it 47-37 three minutes in.
The Broncos continued their torrid shooting in the second half as Graham hit six three-pointers after the break. After the Broncos tied it at 50, Sauer hit a deep three from four feet behind the arc to give the lead back to Portland. The Pilots held onto the lead and led by seven after two Warren free throws made it 62-55 with 10:17 left.
Santa Clara took its first lead of the second half on a Kasey Monteith lay-up to make it 63-62. UP responded with a Warren lay-up to take the lead back. Graham and Pilot freshman forward Jennifer Wassom then exchanged three’s as Portland held onto a slim one-point advantage.
Graham hit another three before Grant tied the game at 69-69 with a jumper. Graham then hit her ninth trey of the game to make it 72-69. After hitting two free throws, Warren gave the lead back to Portland with a jumper to make it 73-72 with 53 ticks on the clock.
On the other end, Graham went inside the three-point arc with a lay-up for the game’s final points making it 74-73 in favor of the Broncos with 46 seconds left. The team’s then exchanged turnovers before Portland’s final attempt.
Cozad recorded a double-double for Santa Clara with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Junior guard Anna Martin also scored 13 points as SCU shot 43.5 percent (27 for 62) and 46.2 percent (18 of 39) on its three-pointers.
Portland finished 27 of 62 (43.5 percent) from the field and eight of 17 (47.1 percent) on its three-pointers. The Pilots outscored the Broncos 32-12 in the paint and turned the ball over 14 times. Santa Clara had 18 turnovers and won the battle of the boards 39-33. Warren and Bermingham each had six rebounds to lead the Pilots.
Portland plays at Loyola Marymount at 7 p.m. on Thursday, before playing at Pepperdine at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
