UP freshmen Logan Emory and Collen Warner both score their first collegiate goals
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. --- The San Francisco Dons scored 33 seconds into the first overtime to defeat the Portland Pilots 3-2 on Sunday afternoon in a West Coast Conference men’s soccer game at Negoesco Stadium. Portland, who held a one-goal lead during each half, drops to 4-3-2 overall and 1-2-0 in the conference.
The Dons, who improve to 7-3-1 (2-2-0 WCC), scored on a failed clear the extra period. Conor Chinn nailed the game-winner from seven yards out at the 90:33 mark. It’s the second goal this season for Chinn, who also assisted on an earlier goal for USF.
Chinn almost won the game for San Francisco with one minute remaining in regulation, but UP senior goalkeeper Luis Robles was able to make the save to send the game to OT. Chinn broke free with possession in the box for a one-v-one opportunity. Robles laid out to block Chinn’s shot.
The Dons outshot the Pilots 19-6 for the game, but Portland held a 6-5 advantage on corner kicks. The Pilots scored both of their goals off of corners. Robles made three saves, while USF keeper Geremy Uhl made one.
The Pilots struck first when freshman defender Logan Emory tallied his first career goal in the fourth minute. Emory found the net on a corner kick from junior defender Jeff Griffin to give Portland the early 1-nil advantage. Griffin sent a beautiful ball towards Emory on the near post. Emory finished with a header on UP’s first shot of the game.
San Francisco wasted little time with the equalizer. In the 10th minute, Kyle Schlumpf found an unmarked Neil Stuart in the middle of the box, 10 yards in front of the goal. Stuart took a touch, turned and punched the shot into the top left corner to tie the match at 1-1.
Tied at 1-1 in the second half, Portland struck again on a corner kick in the 66th minute. Griffin’s corner from the right side sailed past the goal, where sophomore forward Steven Hosseinmardi was able to settle it. Hosseinmardi then found freshman midfielder Collen Warner (pictured) right in front of the frame. Warner one touched it just inside the right post to give Portland a 2-1 lead. It’s Warner’s first collegiate goal. Griffin, who has assisted on three of Portland’s last five goals, and Hosseinmardi were each credited with an assist.
San Francisco responded with the equalizer barely four minutes later, when Uhl sent a goal kick into Portland’s half of the field. Chinn one-touched it to Aaron Chandler, who found the net, tying the game at 2-2. The assists went to Uhl and Chinn.
The Pilots next return home for a three-game conference homestand, beginning with Saint Mary’s on Oct. 6 at 7:00 p.m. UP then hosts Santa Clara on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Seven of Portland’s nine matches in October at Merlo Field.
