Kendra Chandhoke provides the equalizer, while Michelle Enyeart tallies the OT game-winner
SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- For the seventh time this season, Portland freshmen forwards Michelle Enyeart and Kendra Chandhoke each scored goals in same game as the No. 5 Pilots prevailed with a come-from-behind, 2-1 overtime victory Sunday afternoon against West Coast Conference rival San Diego at Torero Stadium. Junior striker Rachael Rapinoe assisted on both goals for the Pilots.
Portland improves to 13-3-2 overall and 3-1-1 in WCC play. The Toreros drop to 9-8-0 overall and 1-4-0 in league action.
Enyeart, who entered the week as the top goal-scoring freshman in the nation, provided the thrilling game-winner in the seventh minute of the first overtime period. Enyeart received a pass from Rapinoe and fired a hard shot at USD goalkeeper Karen Cook. The ball was deflected by Cook, but managed to get behind her and into the net, giving the Pilots the win.
It was anything but easy for the Pilots, who for just the second time this season allowed the first goal of the game. The Toreros scored first late in the opening period, despite being outshot 9-5 in the first 45 minutes. Leigh Ann Robinson tallied her team-leading seventh goal of the season in the 41st minute after beating the Pilot defense on a long ball sent by Giuliana Longmire.
Chandhoke tied the score at 1-1 in the 69th minute, taking a cross from Rapinoe and sending her 10-yard shot past Cook. It was Chandhoke’s ninth goal of the season, while Rapinoe is now second on the Pilots’ roster with seven assists.
Portland held a 21-9 shot advantage for the match. Cook stopped three shots for the Toreros, while Portland goalkeeper Cori Alexander made four saves on the day.
In addition to being the seventh game in which both Enyeart and Chandhoke have each scored goals, at least one of the two has scored a goal in 13 of Portland’s 17 matches and they have combined to account for 24 of the team’s 52 goals.
Enyeart’s points streak is now extended to 11 games and coincides with her move into the starting rotation. She has scored a goal in each of the last five contests, has 11 strikes in her last 11 outings, and leads the team with six game-winners. Enyeart is already tied for fifth on Portland’s freshman single-season goals list.
Portland returns home to the Clive Charles Soccer Complex this Sunday for its final regular season home match of the season as part of a Pilot soccer doubleheader. The Pilots will take on Pepperdine at 2:30 p.m., following the Portland men and Washington at noon. It will be Senior Day, as Portland’s senior class will be recognized prior to kickoff.
