Senior Jake Eastery fires a final-round 71 as Portland combines to shoot a 295, the third lowest round of the day
SAN JOSE, Calif. --- Portland senior Jake Easterly shot a one-under par 71 in the final round to place 23rd overall and help the Pilots finish in a tie for eighth place at the Santa Clara Invitational, which concluded at the Silver Creek Country Club on Tuesday. Easterly finished with a 223 (+7), one stroke better than teammate Joel Johnson, at the three-round tournament.
UC Santa Barbara claimed the team title after combining for a final-round 279. The Gauchos’ total team score of 873 was two strokes better than runner-up UCLA, who finished with a 290 on Tuesday. San Francisco and British Columbia tied for third place with an 881 and Gonzaga (886) rounded out the top five of the 17-team field. UBC was the team leader after two rounds, but finished with a 304 in the final round.
Gonzaga’s Brandon Crick finished with two straight rounds in the 60’s to win medalist honors. Crick followed his second-round 68 with a 69 and finished at five under par (211). UCLA’s Jason Kang fired an even-par 72 on Tuesday to finish one stroke back of Crick.
Easterly followed two rounds of 76 with his 71, a tournament-low for the Pilots. Johnson, a junior, finished with 74 after opening with a 77 and a 73. Johnson tied for 34th place with a 224 (+8). Senior Kevin Beavers was a stroke back (225) and tied for 41st place, while freshman Terence Macatangay (229) and Thomas Robertson (231) placed 57th and 64th, respectively.
Portland combined for an 896 to finish in a tie with tournament host Santa Clara and Cal Poly. The Pilots followed an opening round of 302 with a 299 and 295.
The Pilots next conclude their fall schedule at the Bill Cullum Invitational at the Wood Ranch Golf Course in Simi Valley, Calif. on Oct. 30-31.
