SANTA CLARA, Calif. --- The University of Portland men’s soccer team dropped a 3-0 match to No. 7 Santa Clara Saturday night. The Pilots fall to 8-8-2 (4-7-0 West Coast Conference) on the year while the Broncos, who have already clinched the WCC regular season title, improve to 12-3-4 (8-1-2 WCC).
Despite the loss, senior goalkeeper Luis Robles (pictured), a two-time All-WCC First Team selection, became Portland’s all-time leader in saves after recording seven saves in the match. Robles now has 341 saves for his career, placing him ahead of former Pilot great Joe Garaventa (1977, 1979-81) who was the previous leader with 338 saves.
Santa Clara took a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute of the first half on a goal by Peter Lowry. Erik Ustruck sent a low cross into the box and found the feet of Lowry, who one-timed a shot passed Robles. It was the fifth goal of the season for Lowry.
Portland nearly equalized the match three minutes later on a shot by junior striker Christopher Sanders. A corner kick by junior Jeff Griffin found Sanders in the box, but his shot went just wide, deflecting off the post. Santa Clara controlled much of the first half, limiting the Pilots to two shots while recording six shots and seven corner kicks.
The Broncos took a 2-0 lead four minutes into the second half on a goal by Sean Danzeiser. Danzeiser received a pass from Amaechi Igwe and chipped a shot over Robles.
At the 55 minute mark, Portland’s Jeff Griffin was shown a red card, forcing the Pilots to play a man down for the remainder of the match. The Broncos didn’t take long to capitalize on the advantage, pushing the lead to 3-0 thirty seconds after Griffin’s red card on an unassisted goal by Keith Devey, his sixth of the season. Santa Clara notched 14 shots in the half, compared to three for the Pilots. For the game, Santa Clara outshot Portland 20-5.
The Pilots now travel to Moraga, Calif., to face the Saint Mary’s Gaels on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 2:00 p.m. in the team’s final regular season game. The Pilots defeated the Gaels 2-1 earlier this season, with Sanders scoring twice in the final 12 minutes to lead Portland over Saint Mary’s in Portland on Oct. 6, 2006.
