PORTLAND, Ore. --- The University of Portland men’s basketball team ended its non-conference schedule on a high note, picking up a 74-64 win over crosstown opponent Lewis & Clark. The Pilots improve to 4-12 on the year while the Pioneers drop to 6-4.

Sophomore forward Jamie Jones led the Pilots with 14 points and also added 12 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Senior center Kevin Field pitched in 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while freshman forward Parker Emerson notched a career-high 12 points, including three three-pointers. Freshman point guard Taishi Ito, making his first career start, played all 40 minutes while leading all players with a career-high nine assists and contributing nine points.

The Pilots put forth their best rebounding effort of the season, grabbing 53 boards, including 20 on the offensive end, compared to Lewis & Clark’s 26, marking a season-high 27 rebounding advantage.

For Lewis & Clark, an NCAA Division III school, Mark Robinowitz hit five three pointers en route to scoring a game-high 21 points while David Berggren also tallied five threes and 17 points. Jeff Christensen was the only other Pioneer in double-digits, scoring 10. For the game, Lewis & Clark shot 38 three pointers, connecting on 12.

A tight affair for the first 30 minutes, the Pilots were finally able to pull away midway through the second half. Emerson started a 7-0 run with a three-pointer and Portland gained a 59-47 lead with 9:21 remaining. The Pioneers cut the margin to 63-55 with 5:46 remaining, but would get no closer.

“We had a hard time guarding them,” Portland head coach Eric Reveno said. “Early on, we were trading twos for threes and that made it difficult.”

Lewis & Clark made seven first half three-pointers to keep the game close as Portland took a 37-36 lead into halftime.

Portland’s size proved dominant as the Pilots gained a 19-4 edge in second chance points and 30-18 advantage in the paint.

“Our advantage tonight was inside,” Reveno said. “Our posts responded by hitting the boards and creating high percentage opportunities.”

The Pilots now prepare for West Coast Conference play by opening with a pair of televised games against the Pepperdine Waves and Loyola Marymount Lions at the Chiles Center next week. On Saturday, Jan. 6, the Pilots and Waves meet at 7 p.m. on KPDX-TV in the Portland-metro area. The Pilots and Lions meet on Monday at 8 p.m. in a game that will be televised nationally on ESPNU.

“Our non-conference schedule was rigorous and we played a lot of good teams in some tough environments,” Reveno added. “Our conference schedule will be more of the same. We need to continue to improve and learn from our past experiences this season to become better. I’m disappointed we haven’t win more games, but the fun part is getting better.”
