PORTLAND, Ore. – The University of Portland’s men’s tennis team got the momentum rolling after a sweep of the doubles matches, then swept all six singles matches in straight sets to score a 7-0 victory over Gonzaga on Sunday afternoon in West Coast Conference action at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center.
“Today was a good victory over a conference rival,” Pilots head coach Aaron Gross. “It would have been an easy day to be frustrated and tired after a long weekend, and the challenge was to not take that route. It was nice that this whole team put it together and nobody let up.”
Pilots Darragh Rowan and Alex Strom once again overmatched their opposition in doubles, cruising to an 8-1 victory in the No. 2 spot. Rowan and Strom now sport a 5-1 record in dual play. Playing together in a match for the first time, Joel Kincaid and Matt Loucks had an 8-3 win in the No. 1 slot. Luis Gonzalez and Scott Kennel won 8-5 at No. 3.
Loucks’ 6-0, 6-1 victory in the No. 2 spot gave him his team-leading fourth dual singles win of the season. Redpath, Strom, Kincaid, Kennel, and Luis Gonzalez joined Loucks in recording straight-set singles victories.
The win improves Portland’s record to 3-3 on the season and 1-1 in WCC play. Including a loss to Nevada early Sunday morning, Gonzaga drops their fifth consecutive match to open up the season, and are now 0-1 in WCC action.
Portland will now prepare to host No. 72 Oregon on Tuesday at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center. Live statistics will again be available for the match, which is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
NOTES: Rowan suffered a minor foot injury during the doubles match and was pulled out of singles, where he was scheduled to play in the No. 4 spot … Kincaid and Kennel moved up a spot, and Gonzalez was added in the No. 6 position … Loucks has a team-leading three-match winning streak in singles … Rowan and Strom have won their last three matches in doubles.
