Portland defeats Nevada 7-4 before the third and final game of the series is cancelled because of snow
RENO, Nev. --- It took two days to finish, but the Portland Pilots finally beat the Nevada Wolf Pack 7-4 in a non-conference baseball game that started on Saturday and concluded on Sunday because of snow at Peccole Park in Reno, Nev. The Pilots (3-11) and Pack (5-12) then got in three innings of the final game of the three-game series before the game was cancelled due to snow. Portland was leading 2-0 and the game will not be made up.
Portland was leading Nevada 6-3 in the fourth inning on Saturday before the game was suspended. The game was stopped with Nevada batting in the bottom of the fourth inning with two outs and nobody on base.
The game resumed on Sunday with Portland starter Sean Sargent (1-4) still on the mound. Sargent finished the fourth and the fifth innings to pick up the win. Portland responded with a run in the top of the second. Adam Kerr led off the inning with a double down the left field line. After advancing to third on ground out by Cory Wiltshire, Kerr scored on sacrifice fly to left-center field by Andrew Wrisley.
Still down 3-1 in the fourth, the Pilots put five runs on the board to take the lead. James Allan led off the inning by reaching base on an error. Kerr followed with a two-run home run to left-center field tying the game on his first dinger of the season. With one out, Wrisley and Justin Ehlers singled putting runners on the corners. Meier then singled up the middle to score Wrisley and give Portland its first lead of the series at 4-3. Nicol followed with a single to left field that brought home Ehlers. Nik Kosach capped the scoring with an RBI ground out to second base making it 6-3.
Meier went 3 for 4 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored for the game. Kerr and Nicol both had two hits and two RBI’s. Ehlers also had two hits as Portland totaled 10 hits. Seven of those hits came against Nevada starter Ryan Rodriguez (2-4) on Saturday. Wolf Pack reliever Kody Keroher pitched the final five innings on Sunday.
