Freshman Sean Nicol collects three hits as Portland wins its sixth straight
PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Pilots completed a three-game series sweep with a 6-4 victory over the UC Davis Aggies Sunday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field. Portland (9-13) improved its winning streak to six games, the longest since an eight-game streak during the 1991 season.
Portland beat the Aggies (10-12) 19-0 on Friday and concluded a rain-delayed, 16-3 victory earlier on Sunday.
UP sophomore left-hander Ari Ronick (2-2) tossed eight innings to earn the win, while junior right-hander Austin Dirkx picked up his second save of the day and fifth of the season with a scoreless ninth inning. Ronick struck out four and allowed just three earned runs on seven hits and three walks, while Dirkx lowered his ERA to 1.73.
UC Davis starter Vince DeCoito (1-3) was dealt the loss after surrendering four runs in three innings of work.
Portland had 11 hits in the game and stranded 14 runners on base, while UC Davis collected seven hits and left four on base.
Freshman second baseman Sean Nicol continued his torrid hitting with a 3-for-4 effort raising his batting average to a team-best .397. Sophomore center fielder Justin Ehlers went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI.
Trailing 1-0 in the third, the Pilots took the lead following three consecutive singles by Ehlers, Nicol and senior catcher Nik Kosach. Ehlers crossed the plate on Kosach’s single and Nicol would score on a wild pitch by DeCoito.
Portland added three more in the fourth as sophomore left fielder Cory Wiltshire led off with a single and sophomore third baseman Danny Meier followed with a double to left field. Ehlers singled up the middle to score both runners and would later score on a single by Nicol.
The Aggies put two up in the fifth as the Pilots committed both of their errors in the inning. After a leadoff walk to David Huffman, Ronick’s pickoff attempt was wide and Huffman advanced to third on the miscue. A bunt single by Matt Dempsey scored Huffman and Dempsey ended up at third as Meier’s throw went past first into the Aggies’ bullpen. Brandon Oliver doubled home Dempsey to make it a 5-3 deficit.
The Pilots loaded the bases in the sixth inning and Travis Vetters scored their final run on a passed ball. UC Davis added one run in the eighth as a balk was called on Ronick with Oliver on third base.
Dirkx fanned two and induced a flyout in the ninth to shut the door.
Portland outscored UC Davis 41-6 in the series and had a 45-17 advantage in hits. During its current six-game winning streak, Portland is batting .382 and has posted a 2.65 earned-run average.
The Pilots have a pair on midweek games scheduled before opening the West Coast Conference season at Gonzaga this weekend. Portland will face Washington at Joe Etzel Field on Tuesday, March 28 at 2 p.m. and then host George Fox at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28.
