The Bulldogs score eight runs in the first two innings and win 16-5 to sweep the three-game series with Portland
FRESNO, Calif. --- Fresno State scored early and often as the Bulldogs topped Portland 16-5 on Sunday to make it three straight wins against the Pilots. The Bulldogs also won both games of a doubleheader on Saturday. Portland’s record drops to 2-9, while FSU improves to 11-8.
The Bulldogs scored five in the bottom of the first inning and three more in the second to put the Pilots in an early hole. With the bases loaded, Beau Mills hit a two-run double off Portland starter Josh Roberts (1-1) to get FSU on the board. Fresno State added three more runs on a sacrifice fly and an RBI bunt single, before Christian Vitters stole home to make it 5-0.
In the second inning, Mills drove in three more with a three-run home run off UP reliever Blaine Hardy, who had replaced Roberts with two on and one out.
Mills went 3 for 3 for the game with five RBI’s. Vitters added three RBI’s on two hits.
Portland got on the board with a pair of runs in the fourth. Sophomore third baseman Danny Meier brought home freshman second baseman Sean Nicol with a double to left-center field. After a single by junior shortstop Jesse Rodgers advanced Meier to third, senior outfielder Matthew Peters picked up an RBI on a ground out to first.
Fresno State responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth and three more in the fifth to take a 14-2 lead.
The Pilots put up three runs in the seventh, with two of the runs scoring on a single to right field by senior infielder Gustaf Little. Sophomore outfielder Cory Wiltshire also scored on wild pitch.
The Bulldogs notched two more runs in the bottom half of the seventh.
The Pilots totaled six hits, while FSU had 14. Portland used six pitchers in the loss. The Pilots also committed four errors.
Brandon Burke (2-2) picked up the win on the hill for FSU. Burke gave up two runs on four hits and struck out four in six innings.
Portland next plays Oregon State on Tuesday in Corvallis, Ore., at 4 p.m. The Beavers are ranked in the top 15 in all four major collegiate baseball polls.
