PORTLAND, Ore. --- The No. 11 Oregon State Beavers overcame an early 6-0 deficit to defeat the Portland Pilots 14-9 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field. The Pilots, who led 6-0 after two innings, drop to 11-21 overall (1-5 WCC). The Beavers top the Pilots for the second time this year and improve to 22-9 (3-3 Pac-10).

Portland scored four runs in the first inning and two more in the second to take the early lead. After OSU starting pitcher Brian Budrow plunked senior Nik Kosach and sophomore Danny Meier with one out in the bottom of the first, senior Matthew Peters knocked in his first run of the day with a single down the left field line. Travis Vetters then loaded the bases with a single and freshman Chase Powell made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly to left that scored Meier. After junior Adam Kerr drew a two-out walk to load the bases again, junior Jesse Rodgers brought home two with a single to right field.

Up 4-0 in the top of the second, Peters hit a two-run double down the right field line that scored Kosach and Meier. Kosach had been hit by a pitch and Meier had doubled.

Down 6-0 in the top of the third, Oregon State’s Mitch Canham cut the lead in half with a three-run home run over the right field fence.

With the score 6-3 in the fifth, the Beavers scored seven runs and made their way through three Portland pitchers. The Pilots also committed three errors in the inning allowing four unearned runs to score. Shae McFeely, Tyler Graham, Chris Kunda and John Wallace all had an RBI during the inning.

Oregon State added two more in the sixth and two more in the seventh to make it 14 unanswered runs for the Beavers. Bill Rowe’s two-run blast over the right field wall in the seventh inning gave OSU a 14-6 lead.

Portland crossed the plate once in the eighth and two more times in the ninth. Junior Justin Ehlers knocked in Powell with an RBI single in the eighth and Kerr drove in two with a two-run single to right-center field in the ninth.

Oregon State used seven pitchers in the game, while the Pilots countered with five. UP starter Blaine Hardy (2-1) gets the loss after giving up eight runs, six earned, on five hits, four walks and three strikeouts in 4.0 innings.

Beaver reliever Daniel Turpen (1-0) gets the win. Turpen gave up two earned runs on three hits in 4.0 innings.

Peters finished with three hits in five at-bats for the Pilots, who had 10 hits for the game. Peters also had three RBI’s and scored twice. Ehlers also had three hits for Portland.

OSU had 13 hits, led by Wallace’s three. Canham finished 2-for-5 with three RBI’s and two runs.

Portland next takes the road to face San Francisco for a three-game set in San Francisco, Calif. The Pilots and Dons play at 3 p.m. on Thursday and at 1 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday.
